All I ever feel like doing this time of year is sewing and sewing and sewing. Quilting, specifically. It's too cold and wet outside to garden, the garage is too cold for home improvement projects, and it's too cold to open the windows and paint. So while I will certainly work on those things a little, for now, my heart is captivated by the color and fun of the fabric.

Yesterday our whole town was frosty all day long, and today a few stray snowflakes have been drifting down. But the steam of the iron keeps me warm, and the color of the fabric cheers my heart. Yesterday and today I spent the morning working on a Scrappy Trip Around the World lap quilt with colors inspired from this vintage Ocean Waves block. I couldn't help but notice the contrast of the bright, cheery inside and the cold, frosty outside.

Being the Pacific Northwest, it's grey and dark and will probably be that way until March. But inside? Inside is a riot of color and fun. It's colorful fabric, funky music, yummy treats, homeschooling science experiments, impromptu preschool fashion shows, lego robotics, impromptu preschool zoos including both live and stuffed animals, merit badge activities, impromptu preschool singing shows, soup potlucks, sewing friends and British TV. I love it.

This time of year used to make me sad. Or, not so much sad as restless. But I'm not restless this year. I'm just where I want to be.

What about you? What do you find yourself craving this time of year?
