Now that we're getting to the end of the year, there's lots of "top ten" type lists making the rounds. I thought it might be fun to join in with just a few things before we welcome 2014.

This year I finally got on the Instagram bandwagon. I am continuously impressed by the genuine, supportive people there and it was a great place to share over the summer when things started to fall apart. I didn't always have the time or energy to write a whole blog post, but I could always snap a picture and share it. I don't think it would be overstating it to say that social media was a lifeline for me this year.

So, even though not everyone does Instagram, I thought it might be fun to share some of the Instagram photos I shared this year. The one above is of the fabric and knobs I've found for the dining room buffet, and to the right is one of the rows of completed tiny boats. Besides those, here's my favorite ten, in chronological order:

1. An Assembly of Yo-Yos

A snapshot of a yo-yo project in progress. I did eventually finish and share my daughter's yo-yo pillow here on the blog (April 8th).

2. Rag Dolls and Butterflies

A few bits of thrifted vintage art I had found. The butterfly in glass is really neat, and of course I adore the little Raggedy Ann and Andy plaques (April 11th).

3. Fabric Shelves

This is when I had finally started organizing the fabric on my shelves in the workshop (i.e. my office-slash-craft-room). I am still working on that room! You can see the shelves a bit in this workshop progress post. (April 29th).

4. Rainy Day

Spring is one of my absolute most favorite seasons and I especially love the Spring rains that come through. The sky gets all blue-grey and the greens all look so bright and lush. There's usually flowers blooming, too, and I just love it. It was a deluge this day. (May 5th).

5. Little Wooden Shelf

One of the things that Mr. Magpie built for me this Spring was a little primitive wooden shelf just big enough to store my sewing machine in so that I had a place to stash it when I needed the worktable for other things. Of course it also has some bits and bobs on top, too. I took a ton of pictures of the workshop at this state, but I never had time to share them. I'll do that soon. (July 14th).

6. Retro Pink Quilt Top

I did a ton of sewing this summer. I mean, a LOT. It was the only thing keeping me sane. I sewed so much that if I shared an instagram of each thing it'd be the longest post ever. But I especially loved this picture of the quilt top I made in July. The weather was hot and I could just picture this screaming pink quilt draped over the back of my wing chair in here, cheering me up. I got the top done, and the backing and binding are ready to go, but I haven't quilted anything since my machine broke. Soon! (July 15th).

7. Paint Brushes

Also around that time, I had been trying to figure out where to keep all my paint brushes and stir sticks and things. I like to have them in my workshop so that other people won't take them and ruin them. But I had run out of storage space. Finally, inspired by photos of Jeanne Oliver's studio (seen in her Holiday House tour last year), I decided to put them in a place of prominence, since they are important to me. So I put them in this tote I have on top of the vintage radio cabinet. I'm really glad they have a proud home. (July 16th).

8. Family Room Art Wall

Not much got posted in August or the beginning of September. My daughter got sick, then my Dad got sick and passed away, and everything came to a halt. Most of my thoughts were around trying to take care of myself as best I could. Toward the end of September, though, I started wanting to look at my home and how I could make it more nourishing to me, and I added a few thrifted things to the art wall in the family room. (September 21st).

9. Tiny Boat Peices

Of course, the sewing continued. In this case, the miniature replica boat quilt that I had started six years ago, a replica of my Dad's Mom's last quilt before she passed in 1949 when he was in 3rd grade. In September and October, finishing that quilt becamse the most healing thing I could possibly do. (October 12th).

10. Our Christmas Tree

I couldn't finish the list without including a picture of the Christmas tree. I spent so many evenings into the fall, wrapped in these quilts and blankets, curled up in this couch, reading and sharing and dreaming. It's been a very hard year, but it has been good, too. We celebrated Christmas without my Dad for the first time, and I think we did okay. Our tree was beautiful, and of course we miss him, but we also are happy to be alive and looking toward the new year. This photo just seemed to capture all of that for me. (December 21st).

So, there you have it. My favorite ten Instagram photos of the year. I know many of you don't do Instagram, but I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the moments from the year anyway. It's nice to look back this time of year and reflect on how things have gone, and what your hopes and dreams for the new year are.

I'll be sharing a bit more in that vein in the upcoming days. In the meantime, I hope you are enjoying your holidays and having a good ponder about what you thought was special about this year, and what you wish for next year. Any ideas so far?
