With all this quilting going on up in here, I've been feeling a little guilty that I haven't done more for Tiger (formerly Rocket Boy). Granted, he was the first person in the family to get a quilt made (you can see it in his room from a few years ago), but since he developed some strong opinions about colors and styles, he's been waiting every so patiently for a quilt that matches his new tastes. Not that he's complaining, mind you. He's a very easygoing person in general. But everyone else has gotten new quilts, so he really is next in line.

For this quilt, I wanted to try making a two-color quilt (or, really one color if you don't count the white). I've always admired old vintage quilts that are made this way and I thought it would be a neat, bold, graphic way to do a quilt for a boy. So I'm making large pinwheels out of Kona "Bone" and Kona "Sour Apple" (his favorite color of green) that I ordered online. Of course, the first step was to make umpteen half-square triangles. I used the method where you make two out of squares and then square them up.

Sew four together, and you have pinwheels!

The whole quilt will just be pinwheels, nothing else. For the backing I used my birthday money to get this great stripe that I knew he would love.

Here's how the background and pinwheel look together.

I think it will look good when it's done. In retrospect I probably should have used something like that stripe as the alternate color instead of white. A white quilt for a middle-school boy, what was I thinking?? Oh, well!!

But meanwhile, I have a whole 'lotta squares to trim up before I can sew them together.

Have you ever mixed quilts with white backgrounds with active boys? Did you regret it?
