Bohemian Color for Bohemian Squares
So, I may have mentioned that it was my birthday earlier this month. To celebrate, I spent the entire day on quilting. My local quilt shop gives a discount on your birthday, and I really wanted to take advantage! But for what? I have so many projects already started, and so much fabric already purchased, it didn't seem like a good idea to go buy more. I mean, I am on a budget around here for goodness sake!
But then I figured, it's my birthday, I can give myself something, right? So I decided to make something fun and colorful for the family room that I could tuck my feet under when I read a book or watched TV. At first I had tried to pull fabric from my stash to make something like one of the million ideas I already have floating around in my head. I just couldn't settle on anything. I wanted something new, something fun, something fresh, something cheery.
And then I saw this:
This absolutely fantastic quilt is by Jolene from Blue Elephant Stitches (photo used with permission). I fell in love with it. What's funny is that it's nothing at all like anything I've ever made, and I didn't have much in the way of fabric on hand. So, a birthday trip to the fabric store was in order!
I collected up a mix of small, geometric prints and large, stylized florals in pink, teal, orange and a greenish-yellow. Things that I felt captured the spirit of Jolene's amazing quilt.
I did manage to find some more fabrics from my own stash to add to the collection:
I couldn't stop looking at it, all the pretty, pretty fabric.
I'm really having fun working wit hthese prints so far outside my usual style. Who knows? Maybe it turns out I love these kind of modern prints. No one is more surprised than me. Somehow I love classic cottage cabbage roses and wham-bang stylized graphic prints, too. It doesn't make sense to me, but, they kind of somehow go together, too, I think. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm having a lot of fun playing with these for now.
Now, to finish the quilt!
Have you ever surprised yourself by falling in love with something completely different?
