I don't know what it is, but the first thing I think of when I think of Christmas is the Christmas stockings. Those stockings hung my the chimney with care have come to symbolize all that I love about the holiday season: gathering with friends and family, giving to others with heart and hands, the festive atmosphere.

They're just cheerful, aren't they? Especially when they're scrappy, mismatched, wonky, handmade, long skinny stockings. Little misfits, waiting to be filled with joy and presents for the children (and grown-ups, too!) My stocking from when I was a child (which is long, skinny and handmade) is falling apart now, and the rest of the family has purchased stockings because I haven't been able to make them ones "from Mom." But maybe this year will be my year.

If I do, I hope they will be as cute as some of these:

I do love the look of the knitted stockings. Alas, my knitting skills are not good, and plus I think functionally a stretchy stocking doesn't work as well.

If these next ones were long and skinny, I would adore them.

And maybe if they were super scrappy, like these (but long and skinny):

Or then there's felted... and this is probably my favorite holiday inspiration photo of all time:

I suspect I won't make it again this year making new stockings, but a girl can dream, can't she?

Do you want new stockings for Christmas?
