I think this year's Christmas tree was the fastest one we've ever decorated. In the past I've agonized over every choice, every garland, every ornament, but this year (in part because of my new-found sense of self), I just didn't want to. What I mean is, I didn't want to agonize. I didn't want to fuss over the tree and then be all uptight about anyone touching it or messing it up or breaking anything. How is that fun????? And one thing I have learned about myself this year, is that it's crucially important to me that things be fun. Otherwise, what is the point? To me, there isn't one.

I love my children, and I love having children play here, and so I am happy to put anything breakable on the top 1/3 of the tree, keep it simple, and enjoy the season. With people. And pets. And preschoolers. Who really really try their very best but maybe sometimes are just a wee bit rough with the fragile things. And pets.

Maybe someday I'll have a tree that's covered head to toe in molded glass ornaments (my favorite kind), but for now, this tree makes me really really happy. And that, makes the season fun.

Do you share your home with pets or children? Do you have any breakable ornaments?
