When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Sewing

You can always tell when I am coping with a large amount of stress in my life because my sewing output, like, quadruples or something. It's not that I spend particularly more or less time sewing, it's just that when I am sewing I am in Full Production Mode. You know what I mean? I'm all about getting things D. O. N. E. Done.

I don't know why I find that so helpful in stressful times. Maybe because it helps me to feel like in some small measure I am still in control in the midst of the chaos around me. I was in the same mode when I finished the patchwork on The Happy Quilt last summer. At any rate, it is what it is, and as anyone who walks through my front door can tell, now is one of those times.

My favorite technique when I am in Full Production Mode is to batch sew as much as possible. I will cut out 3, 4 or even 5 quilts and sew them all at once. Or, as is the case right now, I'll cut out 1 or 2 new quilts but also dig into my stash of unfinished-but-already-cut-out-quilts and add those to the mix. This last week I finished all of the main blocks for Butterfly's Pinksplosion quilt that I cut out in the Spring before The Summer. Those are on the wall now.

I've also finished the main blocks for a civil war-inspired quilt for Butterfly and a criss-cross quilt for Tiger, both inspired by a friend's antique quilts. I'll tell you more about those soon. Plus I have yet another quilt for a leaders-and-enders project, the autumn-inspired throw quilt that I was noodling around with on Instagram at the end of summer.

Tiger's quilt is a rainbow of greens, his favorite color. I had to talk him into going all black on the background instead of black and white, but I am so glad he went for it, I think it's going to be great.

I was telling Mr. Magpie about this earlier, trying to explain my stress-induced sewing frenzy, and I said, "You know, 'When the going gets tough, the tough get sewing!'" and I instantly knew I had to turn that into a little graphic I could share with you.

I made two version--this "Keep Calm" inspired one (which you can download here):

And this modern-y rainbow one (which you can get here):

I hope you like them! If anybody wants one big enough to print out, I'll make some printable sizes, too and post those. Just let me know.

Meanwhile, I have to figure out how to cope with the side-effects of the Proliferation of Patchwork:

Yikes, that is one messy studio.

How do you cope with stress?
